Codington County
Historic Preservation
Commission
The Codington County Preservation Commission is a federally created, state mandated, locally staffed board, funded by a federal grant from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, though the State Historic Preservation Office in Pierre, SD.
The Commission works to place historic sites in Codington County, SD, on the National Register and then helps with information and grant opportunities to maintian those sites after they are listed.
The Commission does field work, produces brochures, holds workshops, and provides information to the public. The Commission also works with other boards, committees and the City of Watertown, SD in identifying possible historic sites, maintaining registrered sites - including Watertown's Historic Business District - and generating interest and tourist traffic for historic sites.
The Commission is a crucial part of the community. It preserves and maintains sites on the National Register and works to ensure that historically significant buildings are not damaged or destroyed.
Of the numerous historic homes in Watertown, 19 of them are listed on the National Register. Historic buildings in Uptown Watertown are listed on the National Register as the Uptown Watertown Historic District. There are also 15 other buildings in Codington County that are also listed.
Although much work has been done to preserve the county's historic sites, there is still more that needs to be done to preserve Codington County's architectural heritage.
